Although Coverings 2005 came to a close over a month ago, the industry is still buzzing about the Ceramic Tiles of Italy exhibit, designed by Bernard Tschumi Architects. A prominent architectural firm and last year's commercial winner of the Ceramic Tiles of Italy Design Competition, Bernard Tschumi Architects developed a new eye-catching exhibit using the latest Italian ceramic tiles. The giant exhibit/trattoria was ablaze with bright hues of orange and red. A popular spot, the exhibit was packed with Italian manufacturers and their guests throughout the four-day show. The on-site chef served more than 4,000 plates of pasta on the first day of the show.
Tschumi flew down to Coverings to launch the exhibit and participate in the annual International Press Conference presented by Ceramic Tiles of Italy. He shared his experiences using Italian tile both for the exhibit and his award-winning building in Miami Florida. Innovation was the motivation behind Tschumi's design - which featured exquisite tile curtains hanging from towering cylinders of Panelite and a red and orange striped tile floor. The futuristic exhibit, which inspired visitors to think about new applications for tiles, showcased new collections from Viva, Marca Corona, Ascot, Marazzi, Dado, Impronta Italgraniti, Lea, Ricchetti, Rondine, Vogue, Coem and Bardelli, as well as high-tech mesh and grouts from Mapei.
Tschumi's innovative design was also seen at the satellite café/newsstand, where attendees retreated to relax with a cup of Italian coffee and catch up on the latest news from Italy. New signage across the pavilion reflected the colors and shapes of the exhibit.
Rex Ceramiche Artistiche was this year's top winner at Coverings, held from May 3rd to May 6th at the Orange County Convention Center. The Italian manufacturer of ceramic tile was awarded the Grand Prize Coverings 2005 Booth Award. This annual awards program, which recognizes the best installations in terms of design and presentation of products, is promoted by the National Trade Production (NTP), the organizing arm of Coverings, in collaboration with the other sponsoring associations: Assopiastrelle (Italy), Ascer (Spain) and TCA (America).
The jury selected the winning booths based on various criteria including: creative attributes, presentation of products, efficiency of merchandising and the overall booth experience. On May 5, 2005, the Grand Prize award was given to Rex Ceramiche Artistiche, who exemplified each of these requisites. The association's Commercial Director, Augusto Zagatti, accepted the prestigious award and made the following statement. "This prize makes me very proud. It recognizes the work Rex is doing in the world of interior design and architecture and also the products that were presented at Coverings: Abisko, Metrowall and Frames. Above all, I extend my greatest thanks to our Rex team, who consistently does an outstanding job in this increasingly competitive market."

Emser Tile Wins Assopiastrelle American Distributor Award 2005
The jury has met and the results are in... Emser Tile has been named this year's recipient of the Assopiastrelle American Distributor Award. In its 15th year, this prestigious award, given on behalf of Assopiastrelle - the Association of Italian Ceramic Tile and Refractory Manufacturers - recognizes premiere American distributors for their dedication to the promotion and use of Italian ceramic tiles in the North American marketplace.
Emser Tile exemplified each and every one of the rigorous standards set by the Italian ceramic tile industry. As in past years, a Supervisory Committee, made up of members of the Assopiastrelle Board of Directors, compiled a list of criteria based on recommendations from the Italian ceramic tile manufacturers. Factors considered included: number of votes expressed by the companies; competence and skill over the years as an importer and distributor of Italian ceramic tiles; preference for Ceramic Tiles of Italy for their unique aesthetic and technical qualities; fair-trade practices in the commercial relationship undertaken with the Italian manufacturers; and best showroom and corporate image.
Established in 1968, Emser Tile is recognized as a leading American supplier of the world's finest tile and natural stone. This year, the firm will operate 50 branch sales offices throughout the country. It is supported by two large distribution centers strategically located to assist customers in every market. Carl Delia, General Manager of Emser Tile, attributes the company's success to its partnerships with international manufacturers. According to Delia, "Italian manufacturers have supported our substantial and rapid growth over the years and we continue to develop and supplement our line with value added products.
Emser Tile currently has relationships with over 20 Italian manufacturers. "We have developed a strong partnership with Italian manufacturers and look to the Italians for cutting edge design and fashion," says Delia. "We travel to Italy several times per year to visit factories and reinforce our relationships."
Representatives of the firm traveled to Orlando, Florida to receive their award at Coverings 2005 - America's premier tradeshow for the tile and stone industries. Assopiastrelle President, Sergio Sassi, presented this prestigious award to Emser Tile at a cocktail reception - sponsored by Ceramic Tiles of Italy and the CTDA. The firm will also receive an all-expense paid trip to Bologna, Italy to attend Cersaie 2005 (September 27, 2005 - October 2, 2005), the world's largest exhibition of ceramic tile and bathroom furnishings.
