A retiling project for the Philadelphia Flyers' practice arena and a tight deadline reveal years of on-site experience and installation ingenuity

Once demolition began, the Avalon team discovered that the framing had rusted throughout the locker room as a result of the previous waterproofing system’s failure.

The National Hockey League (NHL) team of the Philadelphia Flyers has celebrated quite a few victories since the club's inception in 1967. In fact, their all-time points percentage is the second best in the NHL. However, one recent win for the team took place in the offseason - and off the ice.

To correct this newly discovered rusting issue, it required gutting and rebuilding the entire locker room.

On August 1, 2011, Cherry Hill, NJ-based Avalon Carpet Tile & Flooring embarked upon a time-sensitive retiling project for the Philadelphia Flyers' locker rooms, showers and coaches' bathroom at the Virtua Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, NJ. The ice arena is home to the Flyers' training camp, so the project had a non-negotiable completion date of August 29, which is when players were scheduled to gather for informal workouts prior to the start of training camp in early September.

“We lost a week of tiling because of the demolition and rebuilding, but I told the Flyers’ Assistant General Manager, Barry Hanrahan, I would do everything to resolve the problem and hit my deadline,” added Showers.

The Avalon team, led by Lead Project Manager Robert Showers, chose various types of tile from Daltile for use in the locker room floors, walls and ceilings. “We used 13- x 8-inch classic plain white luxe, 4- x 4-inch semi-gloss in black, white and orange, 2- x 2-inch Soho charcoal on all the floors, and 2- x 2-inch PermaBrite gloss in Arctic White for the shower and steam room ceilings.”

Also utilized throughout this project were PermaBase cement boards from National Gypsum inside the steam rooms and showers, as well as Schluter Systems’ Ditra (to build up the thickness of the wall in preparation for tiling) and Kerdi (to make the coaches’ bathrooms watertight).

The decision for using orange, black and white was integral to the design of this project, said Avalon’s sales associate/designer Pamela Courtenay. “The Flyers are an iconic team in the Delaware Valley area, so there weren’t any limitations on the design aspect of this project. [They] wanted the correct products used to make a change in the locker rooms for the better,” Courtenay added.

For the installation, Avalon specified several products from TEC®, an H.B. Fuller Construction Products brand, including 3N1® Mortar, HydraFlex™ Waterproofing Crack Isolation Membrane and Power Grout® Ultimate Performance Grout.

“Once we started demolishing, we saw the rusted frames and realized we needed a plumber, as well as other trades, to successfully complete this job,” said Showers. What the Avalon team had discovered was that the framing had rusted throughout the locker room as a result of the previous waterproofing system’s failure. To correct this issue, it required gutting and rebuilding the entire room, which could have jeopardized meeting the deadline for completion. “We lost a week of tiling because of the demolition and rebuilding, but I told the Flyers’ Assistant General Manager, Barry Hanrahan, I would do everything to resolve the problem and hit my deadline,” added Showers.

To help get up-to-speed after the unexpected discoveries, Showers turned to H.B. Fuller Construction Products and its TEC product line. “We used Power Grout to give us the ability to get the Philadelphia Flyers shower facilities up and running. We also wanted to provide stain protection, and liked the idea of better color consistency.”

After: This was the first time for Vasquez and his installation team to work with the new TEC Power Grout product.  “The installers said the grout was easy to work with and the color consistency the next day was right on,” Showers remarked.
