As CEO and President of OPI Products, Inc., the world’s leading supplier of salon professional nail care products for the global beauty industry, George Schaeffer long ago solidified a strong reputation as a trend-setter and business icon. During his 30-plus years directing OPI from the same North Hollywood, CA, location, Schaeffer has also quietly gained the respect of many for his philanthropic generosity to a wide range of causes focused largely on health and education.

George Schaeffer, CEO and President of OPI Products, Inc., designed a free-form radius pool with an overflow spa for his upscale residence in Beverly Hills, CA. The pool, which was installed by Rock Solid Tile, Inc., features ¾- x ¾-inch paper-faced glass mosaic tiles in an aqua-themed custom gradient blend from Bisazza.

And while Schaeffer remains very much a public figure in his professional life, what perhaps only his family and a few select close friends might know is that his keen eye for beauty can on occasion carry over to other walks of life. In fact, at his luxury private residence in Beverly Hills, Schaeffer worked closely with Jimmy Reed, President of Rock Solid Tile, Inc., on the new construction of a breathtaking free-form radius pool with an overflow spa — with shimmering glass mosaics — that turned out every bit as glamorous as the neighborhood it calls home.

Working with Schaeffer, Rock Solid Tile, known for its installation of glass mosaic tile for high-end custom pools, spas and other specialty water feature projects in the U.S., went to extraordinary lengths to implement the design concept. The entire radius pool and overflow spa was installed with elegant ¾- x ¾-inch paper-faced glass mosaic tiles in an aqua-themed custom gradient blend from Bisazza.

Without a single right angle at any transition, most notably where the walls meet the floor, Reed used a high level of care to ensure the entire project featured seamless transitions. With each paper-faced Bisazza sheet consisting of 12 rows of the glass mosaics, Rock Solid set each sheet into a thin-set mortar bed, and then razor-cut free all 12 rows so they could each be adjusted left or right for the perfect “random offset” and individual grout joints. “We used a complete Laticrete System — 3701 Fortified Mortar Bed for our float, Hydro Ban Waterproofing Membrane, 254 Platinum White Thinset for the installation of the glass mosaic and Permacolor Cementitious Grout,” said Reed.

In addition to using this method for all field tiles of the Bisazza custom gradient blend glass mosaics that flowed from a light blue to a darker blue throughout, it was Schaeffer’s desire to incorporate a celestial design element to the project that would further test Reed’s experience and skill. The astrological theme would first require the need for a little extra product sourcing to complete this special request. Eventually, Schaeffer’s vision became a reality. When searching for tiles with Reed they literally struck gold — discovering an exclusive collection of glass-encased, 24-carat white and yellow gold mosaic tiles from Bisazza that ultimately produced dramatic results for the project.

“Jimmy’s an artist,” said Schaeffer. “I had an idea in my head. I wanted to have an astrological theme with a sun and a moon, and he worked with me to make it happen. He helped suggest the type of tiles we should use, and then did an incredible job applying my vision. The performance has been excellence and it seems very durable.”

The impressive pool begins with four “wedding cake” rounded steps as the entrance to the 3 ½-foot shallow end section, where nearby Reed installed a custom-designed yellow and white gold mosaic tile sun to begin the celestial theme. The free-form radius pool eventually reaches an unusual depth of 10 feet, where Reed used the Bisazza white gold mosaics to install a custom half-moon that sparkles alongside smaller, randomly placed white gold stars cropped into the custom gradient field tiles. For the final golden touch, Rock Solid installed another custom feature on the floor of the overflow spa at the far end of the pool. In this case, the design uses the white gold 10- x 10-mm glass mosaics to represent a “silver lining.”

A complete Laticrete system was used for the pool installation, which was completed in approximately six weeks.

Further contributing to the overall glamorous pool design are Bluestone pavers that were employed for the deck and coping. The pool installation took approximately six weeks to complete. There were three teams of one installer and one helper each — making for a total of six workers — on the jobsite.

“We definitely have a unique passion for what we do,” said Reed. Rock Solid has always been super-focused on design, detail and in the end, quality. Every time we walk away from a project we feel like we’ve just completed the most beautiful installation possible. We most definitely had that feeling when we finished our work at the Schaeffer residence. That’s a special project we’ll always treasure.”
