About the Crossville-sponsored Gernaga Hydrant

The Crossville-sponsored hydrant is placed at Chicago's Navy Pier. The piece was designed by interior architect and artist Bohdan Gernaga. Gernaga was chosen for the Crossville hydrant based on his contribution to the contract design community through art expression.

Crossville A&D representative Heidi Vassalotti worked with Gernaga to provide tile samples to construct the unique project. All tile used were diverted from a samples program, ensuring the pieces would not be landfilled.

The design of the Crossville hydrant represents natural elements of earth, fire, water and air in an artistic manner. The use of glass mosaics offer a throwback to the Chicago skyline and the Great Fire that once destroyed the heart of the city. The palette used for the design is that of the City of Chicago flag. Words scribed in the midsection of the hydrant harken to the core values shared by Crossville and first responders.

This citywide public art installation is on display now through November. For additional information, visit http://www.greatchicagofirehydrants.com/.
