Motawi Tileworks Expands Charley Harper for Installation Collection
ANN ARBOR, MI -- Motawi Tileworks (The Tileworks), located in Ann Arbor, MI, recently expanded its 3- x 6-inch subway tile line, Charley Harper for Installation, with the release of three new colorways and a new art tile design.
In addition to the original Cream colorway, Charley Harper for Installation is now available in Ice Blue, Storm Blue and Light Sand. The collection features 10 of Harper’s whimsical wildlife designs with characteristic mid-century modern flair -- Blue Jay, Male Cardinal, Cardinal Couple, Female Cardinal (new), Chipmunk, Grosbeaks, Nuthatch, Owlet, Squirrel and Woodpecker. The tile is priced at $42 per piece.
Charley Harper for Installation augments The Tileworks’ already extensive collection of Harper art tiles in various sizes. The idea for a subway tile collection was conceived when Nawal Motawi, company owner and artistic director, sought to create Charley Harper tiles specifically for installation projects, with uniform dimensions and a sleek aesthetic that would allow Harper’s artistry to shine.
Translating Harper’s imagery onto 3- x 6-inch ceramic felt natural, said Motawi. “Some animals filled that space perfectly, while others were arranged to peek and peer from various sides,” she said. “After many drafts, we have a collection that blends mid-century modern style and the subway tile design trend for a timeless look.”
Motawi Tileworks’ senior project designer, Colleen Crawley, noted that while the initial response to Charley Harper for Installation was enthusiastic, requests for additional colors were immediate. “The demand for color was there right away and we were pleased to meet it,” Crawley said. “Our new Ice Blue, Storm Blue and Light Sand colorways offer an array of options for installation projects.”
