When we look at tiled floors or walls, we see a finished product where required installation standards have been strictly followed. However, without taking the damaging effects of moisture into account, the installation is guaranteed to be considered a failure.
Therein lies the key to preventing costly call-backs and a ruined reputation - the use of moisture control systems that include waterproofing and crack-isolation membranes, moisture meters, backerboards and moisture-resistant substrates.
When viable steps are taken to prevent an installation’s failure, not only will your installation stand out, but your reputation as a tile industry professional will precede you.
ArdexArdex 8+9™ Waterproofing Compound is a high-performance, easy-to-use system formulated for use with all types of ceramic tile and natural stone. The rapid-setting system, which is applicable to a variety of interior and exterior surfaces, provides a protective waterproof coating prior to installation while providing a bonding layer for tile and stone setting materials. Flood testing can be performed in as little as four hours, Ardex notes.
Schluter SystemsThe Schluter®-Kerdi-Board system serves as a substrate, building panel, and bonded waterproofing solution. It can be used to create an absolutely flat substrate with precise corners that is immediately ready for tile. Available in seven thicknesses, it can also be used as a building element to construct free-standing structures for tile coverings.
Wagner MetersWagner Meters is a leader in providing total moisture measurement solutions. The company’s line of products include the MMC 220 hand-held wood moisture meter featuring IntelliSense™ Technology and the Rapid RH® 4.0, with Touch-n-Sense™ technology for accurate, “virtually automatic” RH testing for concrete.
MerkreteMerkrete Hydro Guard 2000 is a heavy-duty, thin, load-bearing membrane composed of a modified elastomeric copolymer. With its elongation properties and high strength, Hydro Guard 2000 provides a 100% waterproof membrane coating in addition to performing as a crack isolation membrane. Ideal for commercial buildings, residential housing and other interior or exterior areas that require waterproofing.
MAPEIMAPEI’s Mapelastic™ AquaDefense flexible, thin, fast-drying waterproofing and crack-isolation membrane easily applies to diverse surfaces, allowing tile and stone to be installed after just 30 to 50 minutes. This odor-free, LEED-compliant industrial-strength membrane performs double duty by providing a continuous, foolproof waterproofing barrier under ceramic tile or stone that prevents water damage to adjacent rooms and floors below.
LATICRETELATICRETE has unveiled several new additions to its recently expanded Hydro Ban line of waterproofing products. The pre-sloped shower pans, pre-formed seats and pre-formed niches are constructed of lightweight high-density polystyrene. Each is equipped with a code-approved waterproof coating, which may be tiled over immediately upon installation. The shower pans eliminate the need for traditional “mud bed installations” and come equipped with a factory-installed drain assembly.
Omega ProductsSiena Dragon Skin is a ready-to-use waterproofing and anti-fracture membrane, and high-quality elastomeric barrier. When first applied, Dragon Skin appears as a light purple color. It later changes to a dark purple color to indicate when it’s dry. It bonds to most surfaces, dries quickly and is ready to flood test in as little as 24 hours, the company says. It exceeds requirements for ANSI A118.10 for waterproofing membranes and ANSI A118.12 for anti-fracture.
DuradekTiledek by Duradek is a very dense PVC membrane designed not to compress “even under intense heat,” the company notes. It has been tested to ASTM C627 using the Robinson-type floor tester and has achieved a “heavy” rating over a plywood/cement board (1-¼ inch total substrate). The chemistry of the membrane is compatible with the thinset mortars and grouts and will not cause staining.
DelmhorstDelmhorst introduces the HT-4000, a versatile thermo-hygrometer for flooring installers. The HT-4000’s detachable RH sensor makes it ideal for ASTM F2170 concrete slab testing or for monitoring the relative humidity of the air in a structure. The HT-4000 is made in the USA, and is available across Delmhorst’s wide distributor network.
